TitleWhat are Branched Chain Amino Acids?
AuthorSue Young
Date10/6/2008

Branched Chain Amino Acids, also referred to as BCAA's, are three of the essential amino acids: isoleucine, leucine, and valine. These amino acids are called "essential" because the body is unable to synthesize them but rather must get them through the diet or as a supplement. BCAAs play an important role in the formation of protein as well as the production of energy in the human body. Up to one quarter of our total protein intake is comprised of BCAAs, and up to forty percent of the essential amino acids that we consume is comprised of BCAAs.

There is a measurable decline in the amount of BCAAs after most forms of exercise-and especially during strength or endurance training. This can be prevented by supplementation with BCAAs. Fortunately, BCAAs are the only essential amino acids that are not broken down by the liver. Rather, they are metabolized directly into muscle tissue. This means that BCAAs are the first amino acids used during periods of exercise and weight training. So, without question supplementation will increase both blood and tissue concentrations. Since BCAAs play an important role in the formation of protein in the body as well as the production of other amino acids like glutamine, making sure that your BCAA intake is more than merely adequate will benefit the body.

What are the Benefits of BCAAs for Athletes?

The benefits of branched chain amino acids (BCAAs) for athletes can't be underestimated, especially when they are taken before or during a workout. One of the most important roles of BCAAs is that they may conserve muscle and liver glycogen reserves during training. BCAAs have also been shown to improve training by inhibiting drain on the central nervous system, especially during extended workouts. Equally important is the role of BCAAs in combating suppression of the immune system caused by extreme or extended exercise. Studies have shown that runners and triathletes who take BCAAs have increased plasma levels of glutamine, which has been shown to lessen the frequency of upper respiratory infections.
